Following the collapse of the United States of America, a small group of Floridians form the nucleus of a new Nation in Montana. Stuart Martin, the leader of the group, brings together a number of the western states under the umbrella organization, WestPac. His basic message of "join with us and we will all survive" brings the West under his guidance. As Stuart is achieving great progress, he loses his life in a terrible accident. His number one assistant, Robert Thomas, eventually takes control of WestPac. Through solid management, economic development, and strict control of the citizenry, Robert strengthens WestPac to be a strong nation with a modern military force. He then takes on the apparently insurmountable task of defeating the massive armies of Frank Turner, the former President of the United States, to again fight for the revival of The United States of America. Robert pursues his idealistic fantasy against the wishes and advice of many. Ignoring their warnings while pursuing his goals, he is confident that he is right and that all would support him when victory is achieved. "Finding America" is the sequel to Roe's novel "Searching for America". This is a fast moving, tight but frightening story that shows what might become of an America that continues down the path of bankruptcy, with seemingly blind leadership -- or worse!

This is the sequel to Roe's previous book `Searching for America.' As the sub-title of that book states, it was `A Novel of Survival in a Nation Without Laws.' Ultimately, it was about relocating a talented, but manageable, group of individuals from Florida to Montana, an area of the country which still had a productive culture and was defensible. This book `Finding America' begins in Montana seven years after the fall of the United States. Initially, it is about the group's efforts to establish a network of cooperative ventures with like-minded citizens such as the Hispanics of the Southwest and the Mormons of Utah to begin taking back the rest of the nation.
The Southeast and Midwest was under the control of the former President's Federal Security Police (FSP). The area from the Great Lakes to the Northeast was under control of the fanatical Muslim gangs. Two efforts were concurrently pursued: First were the military operations; and second was the civil organization necessary to maintain order and to make productive the areas retaken.
At some point, it became obvious that the people would demand a national government to replace what was essentially a military dictatorship. The question is what kind of government? The choices were essentially those faced by our founding fathers in the 1700s: either a pure democracy or a democratic republic. The problem is that the nation no longer enjoyed the work-ethic of our forefathers. Rather we had gradually developed a socialist culture of free-loaders over the previous century. The new `founders' thus had a monumental challenge ... which is essentially the same challenge many European countries face today ... and which Bush faced in Iraq and Afghanistan ... and will be the challenge our next President will face. While the World's leaders are currently failing in their efforts, Roe's approach to the problem is eminently workable.
Two things: First, the novel makes clear that there are common-sense solutions to all the problems facing America (or to the development of any sustainable government). Implementing those solutions in a socialist or dictatorial culture is the problem. Obviously the culture has to be changed, by fiat, if necessary. Only when that happens will people be able to enjoy freedom once again. And that's essentially what we did at the end of WWII in Germany and Japan. It works.
The second big realization, however, concerns the ultimate fate of America assuming our leaders continue along the same path. It seems we are destined to self-destruct ... but maybe that could be a good thing.
Near the end of the book, once a new constitution had been implemented, a new President, Congress, and Supreme Court have been elected/appointed ... only then could Robert Thomas, now in his 70s, lay back on the Florida grass to reflect on his life: "As he thought of everything that had occurred in the country from those days to the present, he concluded that the collapse under President Turner was the best thing that happened to the country."

Finding America Out of the Ashes A Nation is Reborn R Thomas Roe 9781935991243 Books Reviews
If our country ever comes to the condition it was in as described in both Searching for America and Finding America, I hope we have people like Stuart Martin and Robert Thomas again at the helm. I thought this was a very realistic portrayal of life in this country after the economy and the political structure failed to function. This novel gives a very detailed account of the problems that would be encountered all through the process including the issues that had to be resolved when they were working on recreating the form of governance that they would have when they again had control of the Nation. This is a very thought provoking novel which keeps the reader's attention. Should the Nation again have unrestricted free speech or should everyone have the right to vote. These issues are discussed by the principals who give the pros and cons to these and other freedoms that we all take for granted. The pros are equally balanced by the cons and leave the answers to those questions in the hands of the readers. A very good novel. The plot is very interesting and the issues discussed are very important in this day and age. This novel is a winner in all respects.
I must admit, the graphics on the cover of 'Finding America' initially lured my curiosity as I have had a career in the arts for nearly 3 decades and know Duncan Long's design work. After reading the explanation of this novel, I was very intrigued. My opinion of the story line was well supported throughout the novel. The writing was excellent, not overly dramatic as some "collapse novels" are. The author obviously knows his history and the events that would most likely take place following a financial and political collapse of the United States of America. The story line made sense and created interesting discussion with some of my friends after telling them about this book.
After reading 'Finding America', I was so impressed that I read Mr. Roe's preceding novel, 'Searching For America'. The same people that contributed to the collapse in 'Searching for America', were also present in 'Finding America' by obstructing and criticizing any and all valid attempts to rebuild the country. The continuity between the preceding novel and 'Finding America' was very well preserved. There were a number of interesting characters in the novel that contributed to the interest generated by the occurring events. Dialogue was very well presented and I was particularly impressed by the ending. The humanity of the protagonist, Robert Thomas, was credibly presented. This is a thought-provoking novel which I would highly recommend!
I have recently read two other novels dealing with what everyone fears, the end of this country's existence. This novel, instead of focusing only on despair and hopelessness, deals with what would hopefully transpire following the demise of the United States of America. The writer applies common sense to the problems that must be overcome the need for organization, the need for food and water, the need for housing, and the need for protection from the free roaming scoundrels that surface when civil order dissolves. Finding America also brings out the fact that not all people who survive these disastrous times are willing to work for the rebirth of the country. The writer compares the individualistic western cowboy of yesteryear to the mainstream citizen we too often hear about today, the whiner who can't fathom surviving on his own. The author refers to the grizzled, gun-toting range rider of old, cooking his lonely meal out in the wilds. He asks where are they now when we need them so badly. Well, I found many in this novel who were willing and able to do the digging and the hard work. This is an uplifting, positive, goal-oriented novel. It's well written, well constructed, and well thought out. It's the work of a thinker and a man of action. I give it a five star.
